As a children’s author it only makes sense that I read children’s books. I recently came across one that I thought young readers would enjoy entitled, Molly Mouse and the Bear Cub, by Melinda Kinsman.
What is it about this book that I thought children would like? That’s easy! The colorful illustrations and the delightful rhymes are sure to engage the youngest of readers. It is also the perfect book to read aloud and share with your child. Personally, I would of loved this as a bedtime story! I’ve always been a big fan of storybook mice. Perhaps it is because my grandmother always called me her little mouse. Which is why I’m sure Dumbo was one of my toddler favorites. One would think it was because of the endearing flying elephant, but it was Timothy that had my heart. As I read this story, tiny Molly Mouse easily brought a smile to my face as I thought back on those memories.

Summary: This book teaches the importance of helping others. It is a wonderful way to open dialog with your child about how they, too, can help others in need.
When I contacted the author, she was kind enough to share some additional images from the book. Speaking of Ms. Kinsman, I found she has quite a unique story! Let me share with you her short bio:
With a degree and a PhD in Chemistry, Melinda Kinsman enjoyed working in a laboratory, and never planned to write children’s books. Life sometimes gets in the way, though, and when neck surgery left her unable to continue as a scientist, or to even use a desk, she began looking for other outlets for her creativity.
Lying on her side with an iPad, Melinda discovered she could type. She then taught herself to illustrate in that position too. While the process may look amusing (one knee is often needed to hold the iPad steady while illustrating), it is one that she has learned to make work.
Having enjoyed writing simple rhymes to entertain her young niece, Melinda decided to have a go at self-publishing children’s rhyming picture books. That was over 18 months ago. She now has 11 rhyming picture books in her Top of the Wardrobe Gang series, with many more planned. Her cuddly toy gang “co-writers” also share the credits with her for a number of other illustrated books for the 3-7 year age range.
When she isn’t writing or illustrating, Melinda enjoys traveling the world with her husband, climbing mountains, and rock-climbing. As with writing, she has learned to adapt around her limitations in order to still participate in activities that may at first sound impossible.

You may have noticed that this week’s blog is a bit earlier than usual. That is because Ms. Kinsman is promoting her newest book, The Midsummer Dance, on Amazon July 19th and 20th. You can get your own free download during her promotion! I have not had the pleasure of reading this newest picture book myself, but I’m sure it will be another wonderful Top of the Wardrobe Gang storybook to add to your child’s library.
I’d like to thank Ms. Kinsman for sharing the news of her upcoming promotion. Whether you are a parent or a teacher, I hope you will take advantage of this special offer and share many wonderful memories reading with your children or students.
